- Light- “I feel like the days are getting longer…” We hear it every year, and we all know that Daylight Savings Time affects our sleep, to begin with, but differences in light affect our bodies long term. Sunlight is an influential factor in melatonin production; it is produced in the skin through sun exposure and helps with inducing sleep. Our melatonin levels can fluctuate as the days get longer or even shorter. This can make it harder for us to fall asleep and wake up fast. Sunlight’s melatonin-suppressing ability means that most electronic devices these days use a blue light filter for reading in the evening.
- Allergies- “I wait for ages for the weather to get better, and I am allergic to it when it does!” When summer arrives, it also brings widespread allergens that cause sleep disruption, itchy eyes, congestion, runny nose, and all-around general misery. It’s not only the pollen from your neighbour’s summer bloom that blows in through your open windows and doors when the weather is perfect; it’s also the mites, mould and pet hair that blows around your house.
- Room Temp- The temperature of our space affects our melatonin levels and is another leading factor in sleep quality. Raising the heat doesn’t help either. For an average house, an ideal Temp in the UK sits at 18 – 21 degrees Celsius during winter and 17 – 19 degrees Celsius during the summer season.
