When you should change your mattress


Whilst it may seem obvious, a key factor in getting a good night’s sleep is your mattress. In fact, it’s so important that it can affect posture and back pain as well as your sleep and overall health. It’s a key purchase for your health, not just your bedroom, yet many of us are unaware of the telltale signs when your mattress needs to be replaced and updated. As a general guide mattresses should be replaced every six to eight years. This is depending on the quality of your mattress, for instance, slim memory foams should be replaced sooner and high-quality pocket-sprung designs have a higher longevity. This also should take into account how often your mattress has been used and treated, for example, your guest bedroom mattress may need to be replaced less often than your bedroom mattress unless you’re running a hotel! As a main rule, your mattress will last longer if it has been rotated every three months and you use a mattress protector, with many memory foam options rotating isn’t possible, which causes a shorter mattress lifespan.

Note your sleep habits

If you find you regularly wake during the night or you wake up with joint or muscle stiffness this is a sign your mattress isn’t performing well for you and inhibiting you from getting a full night of restful sleep. Also, if you sleep better in hotels or at other peoples houses, it’s a definite sign, it’s time for you to invest in a new mattress. You should assess how you feel, and as it generally goes, if you are thinking about investing in a new mattress, the sooner the better.

Check it’s condition

If your mattress is damaged or noticeably saggy, with body imprints in certain areas it is also a sign you need a replacement. Whilst you may think this is just an aesthetic fault, your mattress is always usually damaged on the inside. Your mattress can also be damaged from your weight over time, if you find you are a heavy sleeper, your mattress may need replacing every six years. This is also evident if your mattress is making more noises than usual, such as creaks or noisy springs. Review your health
Old mattresses accumulate dust mites, mould, bacteria and other allergens at an alarming rate which can result in allergies. If you suddenly suffer from hayfever like symptoms such as itching, runny eyes and nose, you could have built up moisture or mites in your mattress.
